AB HOUSE
Marianella is a simple detached dwelling on the South Circular Road in Limerick built in the 1950’s.
Our project was to extend the existing residence to provide additional living and sleeping spaces.
The existing dwelling has separate living, dining and kitchen rooms on Ground Floor as well as a study room. The First Floor has three bedrooms and a bathroom. As a detached house the plan is slightly different to a standard house with the stair location affording nice light penetrating deep into the centre of the plan and the circulation areas. A small substandard extension to the rear is removed, but otherwise the plan form of the dwelling is maintained intact with the exception of some minor tweaks to facilitate the breaking through.
The new addition was designed to be complimentary in scale to the existing dwelling both in massing and in the size of the spaces created. The new rooms aspire to be different from the existing rooms but respect their scale and size with similar ceiling heights and girths.
At Ground Floor level part of the existing kitchen extension is demolished and a new room created to accom-modate a dining area and some occasional seating. This new room is set a distance back from the boundary to allow the light to penetrate to the kitchen behind. The new room allows the transition in level to the garden by being three steps down at this point with a further three steps externally to the garden. The new window to the garden incorporates an external seating area with concrete canopy, echoing the entrance porch, giving a shel-tered space to enjoy the garden. The plinth to this space continues to form steps linking to an existing patio space along the left boundary.
At First Floor level an opening to link with the extended area is created through the existing First Floor toilet. This link leads into a small corridor serving the new bathroom and Master Bedroom.
The new addition is flat roofed in order to control the overall massing and create a counterpoint to the flat roof of the existing dwelling. The new building is finished in a tinted textured render, chosen to subtly contrast with the existing dwelling in texture and colour.
